Questions You Should be Asking your Estimator
As you review a fence project with an estimator there are some questions you should ask your estimator to make sure you are getting the best bang for the buck, and to make sure all evolved are bidding apples to apples – so you can properly choose a contractor.
- How can I optimize the cost of my project? Layout – gate placement – number of gates.
- Where should I place the returns on my home and what is the best placement for my gate?
- Does your estimator(s) have any concerns (that may or may not add to the cost of a project)?
- Does it look like there are utilities down any of the property lines (there will be utility boxes near the property corners if there are)? – you may want to call Blue Stakes before the project is bid so you (and your estimator are aware of where the utility lines are – it is a free service– their web site is www.bluestakes.org
- Will there be concrete core cuts on pads, rock walls or retaining walls that need traversed, sidewalks or rock paths where a gate is needed? Am I particular about where the return to the home goes?
- Are there security issues such as windows, window wells and/or side doors that affect the fence line return?
May manufactured products are done to the manufactures specs. Trex® and Fortress ® iron are manufactured on 8’ centers, were Simtek® has 6’ centers. If you are leaning towards a cedar fence – we are far more pliable with what we can do with dimensional lumber – but don’t like to go much more than 8’ on center so the section panels don’t sag over time.
