Affordable Fencing – Dog Ear
Dog Ear Cedar Fencing – Our most popular economy privacy fence design
I get asked quite a bit during estimating what fence compares in price to basic vinyl fencing. The best option is our Dog Ear Cedar Privacy style. If vinyl just doesn’t cut it for the look you’re going for, consider this fence as an alternative. Yes, cedar fencing does require maintenance but a once-a-year staining on a dog ear fence is actually not as expensive as you might think and it can usually be done over one weekend on the typical residential property. We don’t offer staining services, but from other customers we’ve learned that professional staining costs typically range from about $3-$4 per foot for both sides of the fence. You can usually stain the fence yourself for under $2/ft depending on whether you decide to rent a sprayer and the type of stain you buy. Incidentally, water-based stains have improved over the years and are often just as good as oil-based stains. Talk to your professionals to get more details.
Of course, there are always options when it comes to fencing. While the standard post dimensions for a 6’ tall fence is 4×4” we are often asked to build the fence with two different types of posts: 6×6” and galvanized steel. The most popular steel design is a PostMaster™ post because it lays flush to the rails and is therefore easier to cover with a slat and has a smaller profile (which is advantageous if you want to gain back a few inches at the property line (see the pictures for more details)).
What sets our dog ear style fencing apart?
1. We only install cedar posts. Cedar is the fencer’s choice because its natural properties give it greater longevity compared to a pine or treated post.
2. We use all cedar materials, even for the rails.
3. We install three (not the typical two) rails. We do this because it helps to keep the pickets from bowing. As a natural product, wood does have a tendency to change shape slightly over time.
