Dog Fencing – Height Considerations

While dogs are a man’s best friend they also a part of what we call the 3-D’s of fencing; namely Dogs, Deer, and Delinquents. As dog owners ourselves we can appreciate the special needs that are created by your lovable pooch. If you are considering dog ownership or looking to improve your dogs’ quality of living it is critical to look at properly fencing your yard.

Even indoor dogs appreciate the great outdoors and the greater and more frequent access they have to an outdoor option results in a happier healthier dog. Fence height is very important to consider when creating a fence plan compatible with your dog and lifestyle.

Fence Height:
While a 3’ tall fence may keep in miniature and toy dogs they are typically not an option for a large or even medium size dog if your goal is to keep them safe and contained. However, know your dogs potential and capabilities, a small yet athletic breed like a Jack Russell Terrier can easily clear a 3’ tall fence. One thing many dog owners overlook when they have a well trained dog that is not flighty or a small dog that can’t clear a 3’ fence is that fences are also designed to keep other animals and people out. A large stray dog that could easily clear a 3’ tall fence might be interested in having your Chihuahua for lunch.

With shorter fencing Dog theft is also a growing concern when according to Petfinder: “Up to two million animals are stolen each year. Only about 10% are ever returned home.” http://www.petfinder.com/dogs/lost-and-found-dogs/prevent-pet-theft/

Ultimately we would suggest a 6’ tall fence, and in the case of privacy fencing in most cities and counties you are only allowed to enclosing your back yard. While many do allow 6’ tall “open fencing” like ornamental iron in your front yard.
