4 F’s of Fencing

Hi, I’m Lee Hibberts.  CFC Fences & Decks recently hired me to take on bookkeeping duties and I’m thrilled to be part of the team.  As I’m coming up to speed with the company, I’m learning many things about fencing that I never knew before.  So, I asked myself… If I needed or wanted a fence – What do I need to consider and where do I start?

As I mulled it over, it more or less came down to the 4 “F’s” of choosing a new fence.

Let me share…

First-      FUNCTION –

  • What do I need /want a fence to do for me?
  • What is the purpose it will serve?
  • Keep something in?
  • Keep others out?
  • Block the scenic views?  Or not?
  • Provide a private space for my family and pets?

Next –    FORM –

  • What materials do I want or need my fence to be made of?
  • What height?
  • Do I need gate?  More than one?
  • Is this to be a privacy fence or more security only?
  • Are there any rules from my HOA, neighborhood, community, county, or the state that govern the height, size, style or placement of the fence I want to install?
  • How will the fence weather?  Will it still look nice? In 2 years?  5? More?
  • How durable does the fence material need to be?  What are the challenges in my project?

Next –    FOCUS –

  • Do I want my fence to be the focus of my views outside my house?
  • Do I need it to mark my property boundaries and frame or back up my landscaping?
  • Is the focus to be safety and/or privacy only?
  • Do I take the opportunity to enhance my property value and outside enjoyment with this fence project?
  • Is this to be more than a dog run, Child’s play space, or is it for adults to enjoy as well?
  • What kind of entertainment space back drop will it provide?

Finally-                 FINANCES –

  • What are the direct costs involved?
  • If needed, are there financing options available to me?
  • How much time will be spent on maintenance?
  • What is my tolerance level for yearly fence maintenance?
  • Will the fence I choose be able to withstand abuse and still enhance my property value when/if  I chose to sell my house?
  • Are there any “green” options in fencing that also are durable and look good?

Well, those are the first questions I came up with…I am sure you have thought of many more.
